Reduce-Reuse-Recyle
In Science, the Year 2 class have been learning about the Earth's resources, how we use them and ways we can conserve them. This then led into a huge conversation on 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'. We watched an episode of War on Waste by ABC and that made the class completely buzz! They are very passionate about helping our Earth and the first step we are taking is to stop using straws.
Single-use plastic straws are one of the most consumed plastic items in the world and they are wreaking havoc on our local environment. After just one use, most are thrown away. What doesn't end up in landfill, ends up in our oceans and is harmful to sea life – especially turtles! The children then made posters to put around the school to spread awareness and show everyone other ways we can drink from our juice boxes etc without using a straw!
They also came up with the idea of starting a team called 'Rubbish Patrol'. Their goal is to collect as many straws as they can and also ensure everyone is putting their rubbish in the correct bins!
Have a look at the rubbish patrol in action...
