Year 9's explore Perth City
On Friday 5 April, Year 9 students competed in the Perth City Navigation challenge.
This is a challenge that puts students abilities to cooperate, improvise, interpret maps and manage their time to the test, as groups aim to reach the most locations around Perth city within a time limit. Students are split into five groups, with a teacher to supervise and after a briefing that includes rule setting and establishing a finishing spot, the students receive an envelope and the race begins.
On the front of the envelope is an address to a gift shop, where each student must chip in to purchase a mascot for the day, once doing this they then can then begin to answer questions by reaching locations like; Elizabeth quay, the WACA, Kings Park, Domain Stadium, His Majesty's Theatre, London Court in the Hay street mall and many more. To do this all the students have are maps, addresses, a booklet full of questions and historical information about our city and teamwork. The goal, answer as many questions as possible and earn some highly coveted Year of Challenge points.
The day was a raging success with all groups making most of the time given and managing to visit a good number of the available locations, including Perth Zoo. What was most impressive was the student's spirit in the competition and the high levels of teamwork displayed, as decisions were discussed and disagreements sorted with a vote. Students even learnt a thing or two, about Perth, such as; our Law Museum being one of Perth's oldest buildings, Florence Hummerston becoming Perth's first female councillor and how soldiers sacrificed themselves on the Kokoda trail.
All year 9 students need to be congratulated on their efforts in not only completing the challenge, but also representing the school in exemplary fashion.
A particular thanks goes to the staff attended the excursion; Mr Hancock, Mr Andersson, Mr Krokosz, Miss West, Mr Jenzen and Miss Bamkin for ensuring the day went smoothly.
