Our annual AFL/W Academy Awards Night and Sports Awards Night was held yesterday, celebrating the amazing achievements of our students in these areas at a School level and within their community clubs.
The evening kicked off with Mr Mike Jenzen, Deputy Principal, chairing the event and introducing a very special guest, Fremantle Dockers coach Justin Longmuir. Of course, being a staunch Eagles supporter, Principal Ms Rodrigues made sure she wore her Eagles scarf loud and proud to show where her allegiance lies!
Justin has been a huge part of the AFL community since his teenage years and had some very wise words for our students, and encouraged them to follow their dreams in their chosen sport. After introducing himself and giving some background information into his football journey, Justin very kindly took some questions from the audience. "What do you think of Nat Fyfe's haircut?", "What was it like working under Nathan Buckley?", "Did you kick a goal after the siren against St Kilda?" were just some of the questions students were keen to hear the answers to.
After being a good sport with the Q&A, it was down to the business end of the evening. The first part of the evening was dedicated to our new AFL/W Academy inductees for 2021, with each student being presented with their first Academy polo shirt and being congratulated by their peers for achieving selection into the Academy.
Following this, our current students were then recognised for their performances in their sporting area. We have students achieving Best and Fairest at their AFL club level, students being selected for WAFL Development Program, Best Team Player and Most Valuable Team Player in several community and School sports. The number of medals and certificates presented to our students, and the level of the awards being achieved, is testament not only to the outstanding ability of our students, but also the level of coaching and teaching they receive as part of CGS specialist AFL/W Academy and sports classes.
Well done to all students who received an award and good luck for 2021!
